The QuarkXPress for Macintosh Demo and QuarkXPress for Power Macintosh Demo applications are provided “as is” for demonstration and testing purposes only. Quark makes no warranties, either expressed or implied, concerning the program. We specifically do not warrant that the program will operate uninterrupted or error free. We disclaim all warranties relating to the program, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties of fitness for a particular purpose and merchantability. Accordingly, the program should not be used for actual production.
Minimum System Requirements
You must have a CD-ROM drive to install the software. The CD-ROM drive may be connected directly to the computer, or can be accessed over a network.
QuarkXPress 3.3 for Macintosh requires System 6.0.5 or later and 2 MB of free RAM. A minimum 8MB of free hard disk space is also recommended.
QuarkXPress 3.3 for Power Macintosh will run on any Power Macintosh computer. The QuarkXPress for Power Macintosh application requires a minimum of 4.5 megabytes free RAM with Virtual Memory OFF. (Refer to Apple’s documentation on Virtual Memory for the Power Macintosh.) A minimum 8MB of free hard disk space is also recommended.
Installing the QuarkXPress 3.3 Demo Application
Disable any virus protection software before installing QuarkXPress.
To install the application and all support files:
1. Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive.
2. Locate and open the folder named “QuarkXPress.”
3. Drag-copy the appropriate folder (Macintosh or Power Macintosh) onto your hard drive. A file called “AppleScriptLib” will also be copied over onto your hard drive within the “Power Macintosh” folder. This file is necessary for the Power Macintosh application to function.
After installing, enable any disabled virus protection.
QuarkXPress 3.3 for Power Macintosh
This is a Gamma version of QuarkXPress 3.3 for Power Macintosh and is equivalent in functionality to QuarkXPress 3.3 for the Macintosh (680x0 version). This Gamma takes advantage of Power Macintosh technology and is still under development.
The document, “QuarkXPress Quick Look,” describes some of the key features of QuarkXPress. We recommend that you review and/or print this document if you are not familiar with the features of QuarkXPress.
XTensions and Power Macintosh
QuarkXPress for Power Macintosh has been compiled to take advantage of the RISC processor built into the Power Macintosh computers. Software compiled specifically for the Power Macintosh is referred to as “native.” Software compiled for the Macintosh, and not specifically for the Power Macintosh, will operate in “emulation” mode. QuarkXPress for Power Macintosh operates in native mode; XTensions will operate in either native or emulation mode.
To identify native XTensions operating with QuarkXPress:
Hold down the Option key and choose About QuarkXPress from the Apple menu. The QuarkXPress Environment is displayed.
Loaded XTensions are listed on the right side of the dialogue box. The names of native XTensions/Filters will be listed in Plain text. Non-native XTensions running under QuarkXPress 3.3 for Power Macintosh will run in emulation mode, and their names will appear in Italics.
IMPORTANT: Each QuarkXPress Demo folder includes the appropriate items for the application to function. Do not move items intended for the Macintosh version into an installed QuarkXPress for Power Macintosh folder; do not move items intended for the Power Macintosh version into an installed QuarkXPress for Macintosh folder.
Warning: Using Existing QuarkXPress Files
Please note that QuarkXPress 3.3 for Power Macintosh files cannot be opened in QuarkXPress 3.2 or earlier. If you are working on 3.2 or earlier documents, be sure to use only COPIES of your files, never the originals.
If you have other versions of QuarkXPress on your hard disk, open your QuarkXPress files from within the application (File --> Open) instead of double-clicking on documents. QuarkXPress 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 files have the same file Type and Creator as QuarkXPress 3.3 for Power Macintosh. Double-clicking on a document will open the first version of QuarkXPress that the Finder locates.
If you save a file in QuarkXPress 3.3 format, you cannot revert the file to a previous version.
Known Problems
The SketchPad XTension demo and the Frontier‚Ñ¢ Menu Sharing XTension are known to conflict when used together. If you want to use the SketchPad demo, temporarily disable the Frontier‚Ñ¢ Menu Sharing XTension.
The JPEG XTension on this CD-ROM is not a native Power Macintosh XTension. Picture preview and picture decompression are noticably slower than on a 680X0 equipped Macintosh. When a native version of the JPEG XTension becomes available, we will post it on CompuServe, AppleLink, and America Online.
